David Popovici's Sprint with the Stars: Results and Highlights from the 2026 Edition (2026)

Get ready for an exhilarating swim meet that will leave you on the edge of your seat! David Popovici, the Olympic champion, hosted a unique swimming event in his home country of Romania, marking a historic first.

On January 17, 2026, the Otopeni Swimming Complex buzzed with excitement as the annual 'Sprint with the Stars' took center stage. This event, usually held in Great Britain, offered a thrilling opportunity for age-group swimmers to compete against some of the world's finest athletes.

But here's where it gets controversial... the format! Nine of the fastest swimmers in each age group progressed from heats to the showcase finals, with a twist - they were given a head start over the 'Stars,' who were the professional swimmers.

In the women's 50m backstroke, 24-year-old Lauren Cox proved unstoppable, clocking an impressive 32.24. Maria Mihalteanu, a 16-year-old, came in close second with a time of 32.90.

The men's 50m backstroke saw 19-year-old Alexandru Constantinescu dominate the field with a swift 26.04. Vlad Inoscu, at 16 years old, secured the runner-up position in 27.54.

And this is the part most people miss... the 'star' of the race, Olympic medalist Apostolos Christou from Greece, touched the wall in 28.09, a remarkable feat considering the head start his younger competitors had.

In the women's 50m butterfly, world champion Angelina Köhler shone, claiming gold with a time of 29.50. Larisa Tirila, a 15-year-old, came in a close second with 29.69, the only other athlete to break the 30-second barrier.

Diogo Ribeiro, a 21-year-old national record holder from Portugal, struck gold in the men's 50m butterfly, posting an impressive 24.60. Stefan Cozma of Romania followed closely with a time of 25.27.

The women's 50m breaststroke saw 16-year-old Daria Asaftei take the top spot with a time of 32.40, beating 'star' Veera Kivirnita of Finland, who touched in 33.02 after Asaftei's head start.

Kirei Barna, a 14-year-old from the host nation, emerged victorious in the men's 50m breaststroke, registering a time of 33.53.

In the highly anticipated women's 50m freestyle, 16-year-old Theodora Maria Dumitru earned a new personal best of 26.22, securing the gold. Her teammate, 15-year-old Larisa Tirila, touched in 28.18, followed by Angelina Köhler with a time of 28.27.

All eyes were on David Popovici in the men's 50m freestyle, but the superstar settled for 6th place with a time of 24.67. Alexandru Constantinescu took the top slot with a swift 23.32, followed by Cristian Lapadat and David Zarnjanu with times of 23.99 and 24.21, respectively.

This event showcased the incredible talent of both young swimmers and established stars, leaving us with an exciting glimpse into the future of swimming.

What do you think? Is this format fair, or does it give an unfair advantage to the younger swimmers? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
